Withdrawals
The first member of the class to be withdrawn was Truro allocated no. 4911 Bowden Hall, this was partially destroyed at Keyham during a German air raid on Plymouth on 29 April 1941. The remains of the badly damaged locomotive were taken to Swindon on 22 May 1941, where they were officially condemned. The prototype no. 4900 St Martin, having completed well over 2 million miles in service was the next to be withdrawn on 3 April 1959, quickly followed by Taunton based no. 4940 Ludford Hall on 9 November of the same year. Only two members of the class were withdrawn in 1960, no. 5915 Trentham Hall from Swindon on 13 January 1960, and no. 4901 Adderley Hall from Oxley on 16 September. A further eight were withdrawn in 1961. It was not until 1962 that heavy withdrawals of the Collett Halls took place with seventy-three examples being condemned, a further fifty-six went in 1963, with a further sixty-seven being withdrawn during 1964, leaving just forty-four examples running into 1965. Nine of which, nos. 4920, 5971, 6923, 6932, 6937, 6951, 6952, 6953 and 6956 lasted to the end of steam traction on the Western Region, all being withdrawn in December 1965. The oldest survivor is the now preserved no. 4920 Dumbleton Hall. It was built at Swindon in March 1929, and was withdrawn from Bristol Barrow Rd on 10 December 1965, but ended up in store at Oxford. Another preserved Hall, no. 4936 Kinlet Hall, was built at Swindon just three months later in June 1939, but did not last quite so long in service, being withdrawn from Cardiff East Dock on 15 January 1964.
The first Modified Hall to be withdrawn was no. 6962 Soughton Hall from Old Oak Common on 7 January 1963. The shortest surviving member of the Modified Hall class was no. 7921 Edstone Hall, completed at Swindon on 8 September 1950. It was withdrawn after just thirteen years and 482,155 miles in service on 16 December 1963. It had spent much of its working life at Chester and Shrewsbury, finishing its days in service at Old Oak Common. A number of Modified Halls also lasted right up until the end of steam traction on the Western Region. As mentioned above, the first Modified Hall was withdrawn in January 1963, and this was followed by a further five other members of the class during the same year. A further twenty-two were withdrawn in 1964, and the final forty-three during 1965. With steam working on the Western Region drawing to a close, Oxford became the last bastion of the Halls, and Modified Halls on the region. Both the shed and yard area became a dumping ground for withdrawn members of the class. A few of the Halls and Modified Halls continued working right up until the 31 December 1965, the end of steam traction on the Western Region. Nos. 6956 Mottram Hall, 6991 Acton Burnell Hall, 6998 Burton Agnes Hall, and 6999 Capel Dewi Hall were all still working in the Oxford area during the final week.
